Artesia is in southeast Los Angeles County, California. It is the gateway city of Los Angeles County, having been incorporated on May 29, 1959. The city has a population of 16,522 according to the 2010 census. The city of Artesia is surrounded by Cerritos on its west, south, and east sides, as well as Norwalk on its north side. The East West Ice Palace is in Artesia, and Michelle Kwan owns and operates it. Pat Nixon, the former first lady, grew up there from 1914 to 1931, though the land on which she lived is now part of neighboring Cerritos.

The Artesia water tower is one of the most iconic landmarks in the city. There is little information about its past use or its construction date. The city of Artesia is seeking historical information and photos of the tower in order to declare the tower a historical landmark.

Artesia’s water tower can hold 50,000 gallons of water and was once owned by Southern California Water before being purchased by the city in 1988. The tower was only intended for historical purposes, and to provide a special identity to the community. In the weeks following its purchase, the tower was quickly painted the color it is now along with the name Artesia painted on each side.

This tower sits atop an artesian well; it was built in 1911. A record mentioning its construction, however, cannot be found. To qualify for historic designation in California, factual documentation must be provided, even if the tower was once a smaller wooden tower.

In 1991, the Artesia water tower was also featured in the film Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare as the Springwood water tower.

In March 2006, it appeared in My Name Is Earl’s season 1, episode 17, “Didn’t Pay Taxes.”

The Pioneer Boulevard in Artesia is home to many Indian-owned businesses. However, even though there are so many Indian-owned businesses in Artesia, Asian Indians made up just 7.9% of the population at the 2010 Census.

Often, proposals have been made to name a portion of the city “Little India” (as Little Saigon is in nearby Westminster and Garden Grove). There has also been a proposal to put a “Little India” sign at the Pioneer Boulevard exit of the Artesia Freeway. Such plans have so far been met with opposition primarily from other ethnic groups in the city.

The LA Times reported in its article “Artesia Thinks the World of Itself” that four of the five members of the City Council were outraged at Assemblyman Rudy Bermudez’s attempt to designate the district without consulting the City Council. Members of the council won a bill mandating local approval for freeway sign designations. The mayor stated that Indian Americans represented less than 1% of the city’s population and East Asian markets outnumbered Indian ones by three to one. For this reason, it is called the “International and Cultural Shopping District”.

In Granada, Andalusia, Spain, the Alhambra is a palace and fortress complex. As well as being one of the most famous monuments of Islamic architecture, the palace is also one of the best-preserved palaces of the historic Islamic world.

Granada was the last Muslim state in Al-Andalus and was established in 1238 by Muhammad I Ibn al-Ahmar, the first Nasrid emir. The complex was built on the Sabika hill, which had been used for earlier fortifications and for the palace of Samuel ibn Naghrillah. Construction campaigns that gave the palaces much of their distinctive character took place during the reigns of Yusuf I and Muhammad V. After the Christian Reconquista in 1492, the palace site became the Royal Court of Ferdinand and Isabella (where Christopher Columbus received royal endorsement for his expedition), and the palaces were partially altered. A new Renaissance-style palace was commissioned by Charles V of Spain in 1526, but it was never completed in the early 17th century. Following Napoleon I’s defeat, in which parts of the Alhambra were destroyed, the Alhambra was rediscovered after the ruin had fallen into disrepair for centuries. The first ones to rediscover it were British intellectuals, followed by American and European Romantic travelers. Washington Irving brought international attention to the Alhambra with his Tales of the Alhambra (1832). One of the first Islamic monuments to become the object of modern scientific study, the Alhambra has undergone numerous restorations since the 19th century. As a result, it has become one of Spain’s biggest tourist attractions and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Among the oldest parts of the Alhambra today is the Alcazaba or citadel. There were many fortifications that protected the area, and this was the focal point of the whole complex. Among the towers was the Torre del Homenaje (‘Tower of Homage’), which served as military headquarters and the complex’s tallest tower. There is also a possibility that it was Ibn al-Ahmar’s first home within the Alhambra while the complex was being built. Torre de la Vela, at the westernmost point of the fortress, was a watchtower measuring 25 meters (85 feet) high. As a symbol of the Spanish conquest of Granada, the flag of Ferdinand and Isabella was raised over it for the first time on 2 January 1492. In the years that followed, a bell was added to the tower, which was rung every day at regular times, and on certain special occasions in the season, and for centuries. The tower was incorporated into the city’s coat of arms in 1843. The Alhambra’s elite guards lived within the walls of the inner fortress enclosure. As well as facilities like a communal kitchen, a hammam, and an underground cistern for water supply, the complex also contained multiple subterranean chambers which served as dungeons and grain silos.

Azusa, located 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles in Los Angeles County, California, United States, is a city in the San Gabriel Valley.

The city’s population grew from 46,361 in 2010 to 50,000 in 2020. Azusa sits alongside historic Route 66, which passes through the city along Foothill Boulevard and Alosta Avenue.

There is a plan under pre-construction and implementation by the MTA to extend the line to the end of its right-of-way in Montclair, just across the border in San Bernardino County. It was unanimously decided by the MTA Board in October 2009 that the Foothill Extension should be included in its long-term plan, and that funding should be released to construct and operate the Foothill Extension’s first phase to Azusa. Construction on this phase of the extension commenced in June 2010.

California’s City of Industry is in the eastern part of Los Angeles County, in the San Gabriel Valley. Despite having over 3,000 businesses employing 67,000 people, according to the 2010 census, its resident population was only 219, making it the second smallest city in California in terms of size. Since its incorporation on June 18, 1957, the city has become an economic hub in the San Gabriel Valley.

There are not many residences in the city, as 92% of the zoning is industrial and 8% is commercial. Most of the residences in the city were either built before incorporation or are located nearby Industry Hills Golf Club, Industry Hills Recreation Center or in the small neighborhood adjacent to City Hall. City of Industry does not levy business taxes and is supported primarily by retail sales tax from shopping centers located within its limits, and property tax on parcels within its boundaries. Property taxes in the city are the highest in Los Angeles County at 1.92%. The City of Industry also has a revenue-generating hillside hotel resort called the Pacific Palms Resort (formerly Industry Hills Sheraton), which is almost surrounded by the City of La Puente but located in the City of Industry.

Chinese investors are attracted to the City of Industry, which has also emerged as a high-tech import/export center for computer parts, with connections to the Asian market. Numerous Chinese entrepreneurs and employees live in Rowland Heights, Hacienda Heights, West Covina, Diamond Bar, or Walnut as a matter of convenience.

There is a major shopping center in Industry called the Puente Hills Mall, which was modeled after the Twin/Lone Pine(s) Mall from Back to the Future. Puente Hills Mall is adjacent to a Speed Zone entertainment center, which was featured in Kevin Smith’s Clerks II. A former IKEA store (opened in 1987 as ST*R Store #1) north of the mall was used as a shooting location in Mr. & Mrs. Smith’s final fight scene. Its exterior was renovated to allow filming both inside and out. The fictional retail store KostMart was filmed in another movie called Fun with Dick and Jane (a parody of Costco Wholesale). Sadly, the building was eventually demolished. Eventually, during the 2003 model year, IKEA California opened a larger store in Covina, California, where the IKEA Store is now located.

City of Industry also features a fake McDonald’s restaurant that’s only used for filming movies and commercials, located within the 30-mile studio zone. Commerce is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. At the 2010 census, the population was 12,823, up from 12,568 at the 2000 census. The City of Commerce is usually referred to in this context to distinguish it from the common noun. From the west, Vernon is bordered by Los Angeles, from the northwest, East Los Angeles is bordered by East Los Angeles, Montebello is bordered by the east, Bell Gardens and Downey are on the south, and Maywood is bordered by the southwest. As part of its southwestern boundary, the Los Angeles River joins the Rio Hondo, which separates it from Downey. Rancho San Antonio, owned by Antonio Maria Lugo, was located in this area during the 19th century. The area was transformed into an industrial area after the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway built its main line through it in 1887. After the turn of the 20th century, some of the ranch was sold to Arcadia Bandini de Stearns Baker, who was reputedly once the wealthiest woman in Los Angeles. During the 19th century, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad and Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad (later the Union Pacific) both traveled through the area that would become Whittier, as did the Pacific Electric Railway’s Whittier Line. It wasn’t long before factories arrived. Residents from Bandini, Rosewood, and Laguna joined forces with industrial leaders to promote commerce in the late 1940s. Consequently, they changed the name to match their goal.

City officials incorporated the city in 1960 to stop neighboring cities like Vernon from annexing industrial land for tax revenue, and Maurice Quigley became the city’s first mayor. Commerce managed to preserve many of its manufacturing and goods distribution bases during the turbulent period of deindustrialization that hammered nearby cities such as South Gate and Norwalk and successfully converted former industrial land to profitable commercial uses. The Citadel Outlets mall, which occupies the site of a former tire factory, is a notable example of this phenomenon. As the owner of the Citadel, Steve Craig hosts an annual Clean Up Commerce Day and partners with businesses to beautify a specific area of the city. Commerce has also greatly benefited from the huge increase in international trade traffic, although truck congestion on the Long Beach Freeway is a major source of air pollution.

Chrysler operated a plant in Commerce, California, from 1930 until 1971 near Slauson Avenue and 5800 S Eastern Avenue. After the 1971 model year, Chrysler decided to triple-stack its transport trains for the 1972 model year; the Los Angeles facility was unable to handle this change.
