Whittier is a city in Los Angeles County, California, and is part of the Gateway Cities. According to the United States census, the city had 87,306 residents at the time of the 2020 census, an increase of 1,975 from the 2010 census. Founded in 1898, Whittier became a charter city in 1955. Whittier College is in the city that bears the same name as the Quaker poet John Greenleaf Whittier.
Jonathan Bailey and his wife, Rebecca, were among the first residents of Whittier when it was a small, isolated town. Quaker religious practices and beliefs dominated their lives, and they met on their porch for religious meetings. Several early settlers, such as Aquila Pickering, were Quakers. John Greenleaf Whittier was a respected Quaker poet, and the city was named after him as it grew. A statue of Whittier sits in Whittier’s Central Park, and another representing his poem “The Barefoot Boy” is in front of the Whittier library. Whittier’s dedication poem led to statues and exhibits at the Whittier Museum; an exhibit featuring his poem is at the Whittier museum. Despite Whittier’s lack of presence there, the city bears his name and is rooted in Quaker tradition
Whittier has several neighborhoods. Uptown Whittier is the traditional central business district centered around Philadelphia Street and Greenleaf Avenue. Central Park and Hadley-Greenleaf are two neighborhoods north of Uptown Whittier. The Whittier Historic Neighborhood Association is composed mainly of these districts, which have been designated historic districts by the city’s Historic Resources Commission. Craftsman and Spanish Colonial Revival architecture can be found here. Starlite Estates sits along the hills and abuts the historic districts. College Hills is a residential area surrounding Whittier College that was recently designated a historic district, along with a handful of homes along Earlham Drive. Eastern Whittier is located east of College Avenue. Up until postwar, East Whittier was an agricultural community. Friendly Hills is the eastern part of Whittier that was developed in the 1950s and 1960s along with Murphy Ranch and Leffingwell Ranch.
Whitney’s Redevelopment Agency has several revitalization projects under way. One of these projects involves the historic Hoover Hotel.
Red Robin and Chick-fil-A have replaced JC Penney, Target, PetSmart, Sears, Vons, and Kohl’s in the Whittwood Town Center (formerly the Whittwood Mall). As it works to revitalize its Uptown district, the city still needs to attract more well-known businesses and open new residential town homes.
Landrum Smith’s drugstore hosted the first meeting of the Whittier Public Library Board of Trustees on April 17, 1900. The first library was established in the Woody Building as a reading room, maintained by Mr. Hester in exchange for space for his telegraph office. It contained 60 books and 200 magazines. Many Whittierites remember fondly the building at Bailey and Greenleaf built with a Carnegie grant in 1907. The Friends of the Library, who raised money for the new building in 1956, were formed as the city expanded, and a larger library was needed. The new library was completed at Washington Avenue in May 1959 following the efforts of the board members, librarians, and citizens fund raising groups. The Whittwood Branch Library on Santa Gertrudes Avenue was constructed in 1968 to expand services even further.

Westlake Village is a city in Los Angeles County on the western border with Ventura County. It became the 82nd municipality of Los Angeles County in 1981. The population of the city was estimated at 8,217 in 2019, down from 8,270 at the 2010 census.
Westlake City is named after the master-planned community of Westlake that was renamed Westlake Village to avoid confusion with Los Angeles. The community lies on the border between Los Angeles and Ventura counties and is centered on a lake. Thousand Oaks was home to about two-thirds of the community.
A large portion of Westlake Village is surrounded by open space, including hiking and horse trails, as well as the vast Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. There are 9 miles (14 km) between the town and the Pacific Ocean in the north-western Santa Monica Mountains. The lake is in the watershed of Malibu Creek. California State Water Resources Control Board and Westlake Lake Management Association, a private entity that manages the lake, have agreed to release water from the lake into the creek.
The area is primarily a bedroom community for Los Angeles due to the Ventura (101) Freeway, but it also contains many large commercial buildings, including the headquarters of the Dole Food Company, K-Swiss, and J.D. Power and Associates. Anheuser-Busch Inc. also has its western region office in this community (Region 5). Westlake has three access points to Los Angeles and Ventura: the Ventura Freeway, the Pacific Coast Highway, and the Ronald Reagan Freeway (118). It is a short drive to the nearest mall in Thousand Oaks.
Several golf courses and country clubs are in Westlake Village: the Westlake Golf Course, Sherwood Country Club, and North Ranch Country Club
One half of the original “Westlake” development lies west across the county line in Thousand Oaks. This boundary separating the Incorporated City of Westlake Village and the Thousand Oaks portion of Westlake Village crosses over Westlake Golf Course, halfway between Lakeview Canyon Road and Lindero Canyon Road, and half of Lake Westlake. There is also Lake Sherwood nearby.
Westlake Village, located in Conejo Valley, is located approximately 40 miles (64 km) west of downtown Los Angeles. There are several other communities in the surrounding area, including Thousand Oaks, Oak Park, Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Newbury Park, and Malibu.
Westlake Village is the headquarters of Dole Food Company. The company announced its plans to build its world headquarters on a 30-acre (120,000 m2) site owned by it, north of the Ventura Freeway in Westlake Village, in 1994. Groundwater contamination tests and a review of possible site plan revisions delayed the decision. The Westlake Village City Council was scheduled to review Dole’s plans on February 9, 1994[30]. K-Swiss, Guitar Center, PennyMac Loan Services and Ryland Homes are also located in Westlake Village.
Residents and businesses in Westlake Village can access potable water, recycled water, and wastewater services provided by the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District

Temple City, also known as the City of Temple City, is a city in Los Angeles County, California located northeast of downtown Los Angeles. In the west San Gabriel Valley, Temple City is located with Pasadena, Arcadia, Alhambra, San Marino, and San Gabriel as part of a cluster of cities.

Interestingly, there is no longer an actual Winchell’s Donuts store within the city limits, though the chain opened their first location in Temple City on October 8, 1948. In addition, in the 1970s, Temple City was one of the locations of Pete & Jake’s Hot Rod Repair, known for custom cars, such as the California Kid.
A contest sponsored by the Woman’s Club of Temple City in 1944 led to the slogan “Temple City, Home of Camellias”, which became the inspiration behind the Camellia Festival each year. There is no doubt that the Camellia Festival was established as a recognition of the value of family life. Temple City has sponsored the festival, which has gained national recognition in the ensuing years, for the last few years. The purpose of the organization is to encourage young people to belong to one of the many youth organizations recognized by their community and to get involved in the affairs of their community. In order to participate in the Camellia Festival Parade, members of recognized organizations must be present. The Royalty Coronation of two first graders is held the first Friday of February.
During the last weekend of February, Temple City holds its annual Camellia Festival. A parade kicks off the festivities on Saturday mornin, beginning at the intersection of Las Tunas Drive and Rosemead Boulevard. Commercial floats are not allowed in the parade, all of the work is done by the young people. The three-day celebration includes a carnival, where the public can enjoy the hometown atmosphere in Temple City Park while participating in games and food booths managed by local service and youth organizations. Local cultural events are also open to the community.
The Women’s Club of Temple City began to sponsor a small parade of kids tossing camellia blossoms to parade watchers in 1944. Today, it has become one of the most popular events in Temple City, attracting approximately 5000 children and more than 20,000 visitors each year. On the final weekend in February, the Camellia Festival is held, which is only one of three events. In addition, there is a carnival and an art show in Temple City Park.
Saint Luke’s Parish Fiestal takes place at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church in April each year. For three days, the community can enjoy game booths, rides, and food stalls at Broadway and Cloverly Avenue. The food and game booths are staffed by approximately 900 volunteers, both young and old, throughout the weekend. Some volunteers have worked at the bazaars since the beginning, more than 50 years ago. An estimated 10,000 people attend the festival every year to enjoy the good food, rides, and entertainment
On Sunday mornings in the month of April, Temple City’s Sunday Farmer’s Market takes place from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm at the parking lot located between City Hall and Temple City Park.

Located in Los Angeles County, California, South Pasadena is a suburb of Los Angeles. The population of the city increased from 24,292 at the 2000 census to 25,619 in 2010. The city is in the West San Gabriel Valley. With an area of 3.42 square miles, it lies between the much larger city of Pasadena, of which it was once a part, and the metropolis of Los Angeles. As the oldest self-builder of floats in the historic Tournament of Roses Parade, South Pasadena is proud of its heritage
The city of South Pasadena is dubbed the “City of Trees”. The streets of South Pasadena are lined with trees native to California. The most common of these include redwood, sequoia, ash, walnut, and sycamore. Sweetgum and other non-native trees can also be found. South Pasadena is often used as a stand-in for Midwestern and Northeastern towns in motion picture, television, and commercial productions due to its lack of Spanish Colonial houses and palm trees. There are a substantial number of residents working in Bunker Hill or as faculty and staff at the University of Southern California in South Pasadena, which is less than 10 miles (16 km) south of Downtown Los Angeles.
The business district is dominated by small family businesses, and the Mission West neighborhood is a part of Route 66. The Fair Oaks Pharmacy and Soda Fountain are of historical significance; the Rialto Theater in downtown South Pasadena is a unique mixture of baroque and Egyptian architecture, built in 1925. The single screen cinema is one of the last remaining in the country. After narrowly escaping demolition in 1978, the Rialto was added to the National Register of Historic Places. After low profits forced it out of business on August 19, 2007, the Rialto closed. In recent years, however, it has been featured in several films and commercials, including Robert Altman’s The Player and La La Land.
Every Thursday from 4 pm to 8 pm, the Mission-West District of South Pasadena hosts the Farmer’s Market. Tiger Run, named after the school mascot, takes place around South Pasadena on the first Saturday of December. The event welcomes participants from kindergarten to age 80. A wheelchair race is also included. It is run on flat sidewalks and roads around town for the 5K, but the 10K includes some difficult hills for the 10K. The event also includes a 300-meter children’s run.
This beautiful city with its tree-lined streets and feel of “anywhere in America” can often be found in motion picture productions. The Ugly Truth, Old School, Freaky Friday, The Terminator, Gone with the Wind, Halloween, Halloween 2, Nightmare On Elm Street, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, American Pie, The Girl Next Door, 13 Going on 30, Back to the Future, Mr. Deeds, Bruce Almighty, and License to Wed are a few of the notable films shot in South Pasadena. It has been the location of numerous television series including Parenthood, Family, Boston Public, Nip/Tuck, Desperate Housewives, Cold Case, Bones, No Ordinary Family, Big Love, and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

A General Motors automobile manufacturing facility called South Gate Assembly was located in South Gate and was built in 1936. As the Douglas and Consolidated companies have aircraft manufacturing facilities in Long Beach and San Diego, the Long Beach plant originally manufactured Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac cars before it was converted to war production in 1940. It also produced engines for the B-24 Liberator, Douglas C-47 Skytrain, and Douglas C-54 Skymaster aircrafts. This was GM’s most productive plant during the 1950s.
