Palmdale is a city in northern Los Angeles County in the U.S. state of California. The city lies in the Antelope Valley region of Southern California. The San Gabriel Mountains separate Palmdale from the Los Angeles Basin to the south.
On August 24, 1962, Palmdale became the first community in the Antelope Valley to incorporate. Forty-seven years later, in November 2009, voters approved making it a charter city. Palmdale’s population was 152,750 at the 2010 census, up from 116,670 at the 2000 census. Palmdale is the 35th most populous city in California. Together with its immediate northern neighbor, the city of Lancaster, the Palmdale/Lancaster urban area had an estimated population of 513,547 as of 2013.
Palmdale’s largest industry is aerospace. Several manufacturing companies have relocated to Palmdale in search of more affordable land, proximity to Palmdale Airport, and special tax breaks.
Special tax breaks are granted to companies relocating to Palmdale due to the city’s Antelope Valley Enterprise Zone and Palmdale Federal Foreign Trade Zone. In these special zones, businesses are given various state and federal tax breaks and municipal grant incentives to relocate there. As a result of these zones, Palmdale and Lancaster were able to attract more jobs to the area, which decreased their dependence on the Los Angeles Basin and the San Fernando Valley. The project will relieve traffic congestion and pollution and stabilize the Antelope Valley economy on several fronts. Local governments in the Antelope Valley are working to diversify their economies so they don’t just rely on the aerospace industry, which is known for its “feast or famine” seasons.
Palmdale is home to several multinational corporations and manufacturing firms, helping diversify the local economy. US Pole, a major street lighting pole manufacturer, and Delta Scientific, a leading manufacturer of high strength vehicle barrier systems, which provide protection to federal, state, and local buildings and is a major supplier to the US State Department and military for embassies and other installations worldwide, are the two major anchor tenants of the Fairway Business Park. In addition to the Palmdale Auto Mall, the Palmdale Trade and Commerce Center is home to many other major manufacturers, industrial plants, corporate offices, and other employers. The new Palmdale Regional Medical Center will be supported by several medical and related support offices.
Located in the Antelope Valley, the Antelope Valley Mall is the region’s premier shopping and dining destination.
In accordance with its contract with the County of Los Angeles, the city is policed by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and its judicial system is integrated with the Los Angeles County Superior Court.

The city of Manhattan Beach is in southwestern Los Angeles County, California, United States. It is located south of El Segundo, west of Hawthorne and north of Hermosa Beach. Its population was 35,135 at the 2010 census.
There are three Beach Cities in Los Angeles County, Manhattan Beach being one. Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach and the other two are located in the South Bay area. One of the most prominent features of the community is its long, sandy beach, which measures just under 2.1 miles (3.4 km) long and is roughly 450 feet (140 m) wide. Since Manhattan Beach is located near the Pacific Ocean, it has an unusual temperate climate, with a year-round average high temperature of 69.1 °F (20.6 °C) and a year-round average low temperature of 56.4 °F (13.6 °C).
Beach volleyball and surfing are very popular activities at Manhattan Beach.
In Manhattan Beach, most of the land used to be sand dunes which were once exposed and are now covered with buildings and streets. A large portion of the city’s western portion is surrounded by dunes that allow residents to enjoy ocean views. It is located in the southwest region of the city, and is 244 feet high, making it one of the city’s tallest hills. Sand Dune Park is the only place with an exposed sand dune left from the original landscape, where one can also find sand that resembles the original landscape. Over a ten-year period in the late 1920s, excessive sand from Manhattan Beach was purchased by Hawaiian developers who obtained a ten-year shipping agreement from Kuhn Brothers Construction Company to ship the sand from Manhattan Beach to Waikiki Beach over the Pacific Ocean in order to extend the current residential development along Waikiki.
In total, the beach stretches over 2.1 miles long and is 400 feet wide. Toward the beginning of the last century, there was a sloping beach and it was narrow (approximately 150 feet). A great deal of sand was dumped on beaches to the north during the construction of the Hyperion Treatment Plant, Marina Del Rey, and Scattergood Power Plant from 1938 to 1989, which caused its width to more than double. By the natural littoral flow of the ocean, sand was carried southward and this widened Manhattan Beach.
The city hosts the Manhattan Beach Open Volleyball Tournament and the International Surf Festival every August.

Malibu is a beach city within Los Angeles County, California, in the Santa Monica Mountains region. It is located about 30 miles (48 km) west of Downtown Los Angeles. With a Mediterranean climate and a long coastline of 21 miles (34 km), Malibu was integrated into the City of Malibu in 1991. Hollywood celebrities are traditionally associated with the exclusive Malibu Colony. There are many affluent residents in Malibu, but many residents are middle class. Malibu’s residents live within a half-mile (0.8 km) to within a few hundred yards of Pacific Coast Highway (State Route 1). Some residents live up to one mile (1.6 km) from the beach up narrow canyons. As of the 2010 census, the population of the city was 12,645.
The beaches along the Malibu coast are nicknamed “the ‘Bu” by surfers and locals: Topanga Beach, Big Rock Beach, Las Flores Beach, La Costa Beach, Surfrider Beach, Dan Blocker Beach, Malibu Beach, Zuma Beach, Broad Beach, Point Dume Beach, and County Line Beach. There are many state parks and beaches on the Malibu coast, such as Malibu Creek State Park, Leo Carrillo State Beach and Park, Point Mugu State Park, and Robert H. Meyer Memorial State Beach, which contains three beaches: El Pescador, La Piedra, and El Matador. The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area has many parks that lie along the ridges that tower above the city, in addition to local parks such as Malibu Bluffs Park[20] (formerly Malibu Bluffs State Park), Trancas Canyon Park, Las Flores Creek Park, and Legacy Park.
There are signs around the city proclaiming “21 miles of scenic beauty”, referring to the limits of the incorporated city. From the historic 27-mile (43-kilometer) length of the Malibu coast spanning from Tuna Canyon on the southeast to Point Mugu in Ventura County on the northwest, the city updated the signage in 2017. Residents of the unincorporated canyon areas find Malibu to be the closest commercial center, which is why the ZIP codes of Malibu are included. It is surrounded on three sides by the Santa Monica Mountains (Agoura Hills, Calabasas and Woodland Hills) to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the north, and Solromar in Ventura County to the west.

The city of Long Beach is in Los Angeles County, California. With a population of 466,742, it is the 42nd most populous city in the United States. Long Beach is the seventh-most populous city in California.
Long Beach was incorporated in 1897 and is in the southern part of Los Angeles County in Southern California. Long Beach is about 32 kilometers south of downtown Los Angeles and is part of the Gateway Cities region. In addition to being the second busiest container port in the United States, Long Beach is also one of the largest shipping ports in the world. A small oilfield runs directly beneath the city as well as offshore.
Among the city’s attractions are the permanent docked RMS Queen Mary and the Aquarium of the Pacific. Long Beach also hosts the Grand Prix of Long Beach, the IndyCar race, and the Pride Parade.
Over time, the economic base has changed. The oil industry created a boom and continues to fund a large portion of the city’s budget. The city was a Navy town before the base closed. An important part of the economy was the aerospace industry. In World War II, Douglas Aircraft Company (later McDonnell Douglas and now part of Boeing) built aircraft at the Long Beach Airport, and later built DC-8s, DC-9s, DC-10s, and MD-11s. Mercedes-Benz and Relativity Space leased the Boeing 717 plant until 2006 and the C-17 Globemaster III plant until 2015. Despite greatly reducing the number of local employees in recent years, Boeing continues to be the largest private employer in the city.
The climate in Long Beach can be described as either hot semi-arid or hot-summer Mediterranean. The city has hot summers and mild to warm winters with occasional rain. As with Southern California in general, Long Beach has mostly sunny days. The temperatures recorded at the Long Beach Airport, which is 4.4 miles (6.4 km) inland from the coast, are much higher than those along the coast. The summer months are characterized by low clouds and fog, which develop overnight and blanket the area in many mornings. Fog usually clears out by afternoon, and a sea breeze from the west keeps temperatures moderate.
During the winter months in Long Beach, as in most places in Southern California, most rainfall occurs. Heavy rainfall can be caused by storms.
Long Beach State hosts the CSULB Wide Screen Film Festival each October at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center. Originally intended to showcase widescreen films, the festival has evolved into an artist-in-residence program. Steven Spielberg, a former CSULB student, shows and discusses his or her own videos and movies, as well as the 10 films that had the greatest impact on his or her approach.
