Signal Hill is a city in Los Angeles County, California, covering an area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 square kilometers). The city is an enclave located high on a hill surrounded by Long Beach. Approximately three years after oil was found in Signal Hill, the town became incorporated on April 22, 1924. It was estimated that the population stood at 11,016 in the 2010 census.
Approximately 64% of the city’s land area is in the country. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city covers an area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2). All sides of the city are surrounded by Long Beach, California.
Signal Hill lies within the 562 area code. In July 2002, Signal Hill received its own ZIP code, 90755, after sharing three different ZIP codes with the city of Long Beach previously.
Signal Hill has several parks despite being a small town. The biggest of them is Signal Hill Park with a footprint of 40,000 square feet. This park is adjacent to City Hall, the Community Center and the Library. There are picnic tables, a playground, basketball courts, a softball field, and restrooms in the park. During the summer months, there is an amphitheater where there are weekly outdoor concerts.
At the top of Signal Hill lies Hilltop Park, 3.2 acres (13,000 m2). It is very popular for its beautiful views. The park features several telescopes. Several public artworks and a mist tower are also located in the park. This park is a popular geocache hiding spot. When the clouds clear, you can see Santa Monica mountains, downtown LA, mountains backing it up, all the communities in between, Long Beach, the South Bay area, and out to sea Catalina Island. This is a view of the 10-million population-strong LA Basin. Homesteads block the view in some spots.
Long Beach’s Reserve Park, a large grassy area with picnic tables next to a 4.7 million gallon water reservoir, covers 2.8 acres (11,000 m2).
Near the original well on Signal Hill, Discovery Well Park features 4.9 acres (20,000 m2) and 1.8 acres (7,300 m2) of flat land.
Furthermore, there are six pocket parks totaling less than half an acre (2,000 square meters), including Calbrisas Park, Hillbrook Park, Panorama Promenade, Raymond Arbor Park, Sunset View Park, and Temple View Park.
The Unity Sculpture, an 11-foot-high sculpture atop a 4′ pedestal with a seating courtyard dedicated to the victims of September 11, is located near the Panorama Promenade.
Many of the parks and roadways have designated pedestrian-only paths. There is a great deal of interest in hiking along these trails as well as on the Signal Hill sidewalks. These paths are primarily flat with some steep sections ranging between 15 and 25%.

Sierra Madre is a city in Los Angeles County, California, with a population of 10,917 at the 2010 U.S. census, up from 10,580 at the 2000 U.S. Census. Under the southern edge of the Angeles National Forest, the city is situated in the foothills of the San Gabriel Valley. The city is bordered on the west by Altadena and Pasadena, and on the east by Arcadia. Sierra Madre is known as the City of Wisteria, and its city seal depicts a drawing of the well-known 150-meter (500-foot) vine. The city was named an All-America City in 2007 and is also known as the “Village of the Foothills.”
The downtown of Sierra Madre is filled with small shops and restaurants. Every year, Sierra Madre hosts a locally renowned Independence Day parade and three days of festivities. Depending on when the Monday of the holiday weekend falls, the parade date changes from year to year. The old tradition of using water-filled squirt guns in the parade has been scrapped in favor of throwing confetti eggs at parade participants. The firework-free weekend includes concerts, food and game booths, and the ubiquitous beer booth.
The Upper and Lower Sierra Madre Canyons are located in the northern and northeastern parts of the city. There are narrow and winding roads, lush vegetation, and views of the San Gabriel Valley in these small communities. Bailey Canyon Wilderness Park has all of these resources and offers three hiking trails to the public: Sierra Madre Wilderness Trail, Live Oak Nature Trail, and Canyon View Nature Trail. There are barbecues and fire pits in the picnic area, as well as a native botanical area
Sierra Madre hosts the annual Wisteria Festival (Wisteria Sinensis) to celebrate its 1890s-planted 1 acre (4,000 m2) Chinese wisteria vine. Guinness World Records has named the plant one of the seven horticultural wonders of the world, as it is the largest flowering plant in the world. One day a year the vines on private property can be seen during the annual festival. A 500-foot-long Wisteria Vine was purchased in 1894 from the Wilson nursery, in Monrovia, by Mrs. William (Alice) Brugman for 75 cents. As time went by, the lavender-flowering vine grew so large that it crushed the house. As of now, the vine is spanning two backyards in the 500 block of North Hermosa Avenue. It measures more than an acre (4,000 m2) and weighs more than 250 tons.
Sierra Madre provides transportation through the Gateway bus system. Pasadena Transit route 60 provides access to Metro Gold Line stations on Sierra Madre Villa Avenue and Foothill Boulevard in the city. Metro Micro provides service within Sierra Madre as well. As of June 27, 2021, Metro Lines 268 & 487 will no longer serve the area.

Northwestern Los Angeles County, California, is home to the city of Santa Clarita. It is the third-largest city in Los Angeles County and the 17th largest city in California, according to the 2020 census. Santa Clarita is in the Santa Clarita Valley and occupies 70.75 square miles (183.2 km2) of land. The city is a well-known example of a U.S. edge city, satellite city, or boom burb.
Around 450 AD, the Chumash people began to settle in the Santa Clarita Valley following their displacement by the Tataviam. The Rancho San Francisco was established after Spanish colonists arrived in Alta California, encompassing much of the Santa Clarita Valley. Saugus and Newhall were founded by Henry Mayo Newhall in 1875 after he purchased Rancho San Francisco. Newhall Land and Farming Company played an important role in the city’s development. Santa Clarita, which encompasses Canyon Country, Newhall, Saugus, and Valencia, was incorporated in 1987. Residents commonly refer to one of the four communities when asked where they come from. Santa Clarita is bordered on the west by the Golden State Freeway (I-5). Part of the city’s irregular east boundary is formed by the Antelope Valley Freeway (CA-14). Both freeways merge at Newhall Pass, near Los Angeles’ southernmost point.
California Institute of the Arts, an internationally renowned art university; The Master’s University, a Christian liberal arts college; and College of the Canyons, a community college, are all located in Santa Clarita. There are several companies headquartered in or near Newhall, such as Princess Cruises, Sunkist, Remo, and Newhall Land and Farming Company. One of the fastest-growing cities in California, Santa Clarita has low crime rates and high-ranking schools. Castaic and Stevenson Ranch, two unincorporated communities located north and west of Santa Clarita, are closely connected to the city. While Six Flags Magic Mountain is commonly believed to be in the Valencia area of Santa Clarita, it is also west of Interstate 5 and outside of the city limits.
Summers in Santa Clarita are hot and very dry, while winters are cold and moderately rainy. The city enjoys a variety of microclimates due to its proximity to the Mojave Desert (High Desert) and Pacific Ocean, as well as its wide range of elevations. Particularly in the summer, the temperature varies a lot during the day. Köppen’s climate classification gives Santa Clarita a hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Csa).
During summer, the valley is surrounded by high mountains with occasional high humidity and cumulus clouds. In the summer, thunderstorms occur when the monsoon brings moisture as well as in the winter when Pacific storms occur. While summer-like temperatures can still occur in May and October, the hottest months are July and August. The average high temperature during this time of year is in the 90s Fahrenheit (32–38 °C); however, heat waves can bring temperatures well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 °C). Recently, the temperatures reached 115°F (46°C). On clear winter nights, temperatures sometimes dip below freezing. During the winter, the region experiences mostly rainy weather from December to March, with some snow in isolated areas. Most snow falls in the mountains surrounding the city. Except for a small area of southern Newhall, much of Santa Clarita falls within USDA plant hardiness zone 9b. The average temperature in Santa Clarita is higher than downtown Los Angeles, but lower than in the Antelope Valley.

San Fernando (Spanish for “St. Ferdinand”) is a city in Los Angeles County, California, in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. San Fernando lies on all sides of Los Angeles and is part of that metropolitan area. The city’s population was 23,645 according to the 2010 census.
With the neighborhoods of Sylmar to its north, Lake View Terrace to its east, Pacoima to its south, and Mission Hills to its west, San Fernando is completely surrounded by Los Angeles. There are four main freeways that serve the city: Interstates 5 (Golden State), 210 (Foothill), 118 (Ronald Reagan), and 405 (San Diego).
As part of the Mexican land grant of Rancho Ex-Mission San Fernando, the city was named after the nearby Mission San Fernando Rey de Espaa (which in turn was named after St. Ferdinand). Charles Maclay, the founder of San Fernando, bought 56,000 acres (227 km2) of the Rancho. George K. Porter and Benjamin F. Porter, cousins and owners of the future Porter Ranch, each received a third of the land. Maclay founded the Maclay School of Theology, a Methodist seminary, in San Fernando in 1885. It became an affiliate of the University of Southern California after his death, and later moved to the Claremont School of Theology.
In the 1910s, most towns in the surrounding San Fernando Valley agreed to annexation by Los Angeles, eager to tap the abundant water supply provided by the newly opened Los Angeles Aqueduct. However, San Fernando remained an independent city thanks to its abundant groundwater supplies. Following incorporation in 1911, the city of San Fernando attempted to annex its city limits to Sylmar, Mission Hills, and Pacoima, but the city of Los Angeles kept up their rapid annexation and caused many failed attempts; and by the 1950s, the city said annexations were difficult due to Los Angeles’ large bureaucracy. Even as the San Fernando Valley has transitioned from an agricultural to a suburban area after World War II, San Fernando has maintained its independence.
San Fernando has experienced a significant demographic shift as has much of the San Fernando Valley east of the San Diego Freeway. An aging population of middle-class whites, who once dominated the area in the 1950s, has contributed to the movement into other parts of the San Fernando Valley. There has also been movement into the Antelope Valley as well as the Santa Clarita Valley. By 2015, the population of Latinos in the Greater Los Angeles area reached 90 percent (the largest percentage in the Greater Los Angeles area).

The city of San Dimas (Spanish for “Saint Dismas”) is situated in the San Gabriel Valley of the Los Angeles County in the United States. In 2010, the city had a total population of 33,371 according to the United States Census Bureau. Historical records indicate that the city took its name from the San Dimas Canyon which is in the San Gabriel Mountains above the northern part of San Dimas today.
The city of San Dimas is bordered at its northern edge by the San Gabriel Mountains, its southern border by Glendora and Covina, its eastern border by La Verne, its west border by Pomona, and its southern border by Walnut.
In the year 1774, the first known European exploration of the area happened when Juan Bautista de Anza travelled through on the first overland expedition of La California, from New Spain-Mexico towards Monterey Bay. It is believed that the area was originally developed in 1837 due to the Mexican land grant granted to Juan Bautista Alvarado and Ygnacio Palomares for Rancho San Jose, which was then in the Upper California region. The area later became known as La Cienega Mud Springs because of the nearby mud springs that created a riparian marsh where healing waters flowed. In Rancho San José, the two Palomares and Vejar ran sheep and cattle operations, as well as growing crops for consumption by the ranch’s residents. It was during the early 1860s that a severe drought decimated the ranch’s sheep and cattle population. In 1865, Ygnacio Palomares’ widow began selling his ranch land as his widow began selling the land after Ygnacio’s death in 1864. A few years later in 1864, Isaac Schlesinger and Hyman Tischler, both Los Angeles merchants, seized Vejar’s interest in the property by foreclosure. Schlesinger and Tischler sold Louis Phillips the ranch in 1866 as the result of negotiations.
In 1887, the Los Angeles and San Gabriel Valley Railroad, later purchased by the Santa Fe Railroad, led to the first map of La Cienega Mud Springs. During the land boom that followed, the San Jose Ranch Company was formed, which laid out the first streets. After the earthquake, small businesses began opening in the city, and its name was changed to San Dimas. Agricultural production soon made San Dimas an important city. The first crops planted in the town were wheat and other crops from the Midwest. Then orange and lemon groves covered the valley. San Dimas once had four citrus packing houses and a marmalade factory. Here is where the name Sunkist arose, first spelled “Sunkissed”. San Dimas relied heavily on oranges as a crop and business until the mid-20th century.
Since 1960, San Dimas has been incorporated as a city, known for its art, small-town feel, and equestrian heritage. A F “Shorty” Feldbush and several other city volunteers also hosted the Miss Rodeo California State Pageant in San Dimas in the 1990s. Before it moved to its new home in central California, the pageant was held every week in conjunction with the city’s Western Days and Rodeo.
The San Dimas Golf Course was purchased in 1971. The San Dimas Community Hospital opened its doors in 1972. According to the San Dimas Historical Society, the San Dimas Swim and Racquet Club was built next to the San Dimas High School in 1981.
